Sunday through Saturday - Ozark, MO
Build the Berea Ladderback with Mark Hicks
Mark will guide you through this seven day class as you build a beautiful and iconic Post and Rung Chair, originally designed by Brian Boggs.
Personalized and Proven Instruction
Class size is limited to two students. So you'll have all the guidance you need.
Every process is broken down into small, manageable steps so that you can concentrate on mastering one task at a time before moving onto the next.
In addition to showing you how, I always explain why, so that you will understand the underlying concepts and how each step fits into the big picture.
Learn how to:
Select lumber and mill parts for chairmaking
Steam bend the rear legs and slats
Hand shape curved and straight parts using a drawknife, spokeshave and scraper
Work with angles and curved parts
Use moisture content and grain orientation to make a long-lasting joint
Assemble the chair without stress using hide glue
Sharpen chairmaking tools
Weave a seat using Split Reed (Light or Smoked)
Arm Chair or Side... You Choose!
Though the costs are different, the Arm and Side Chairs share many of the same processes. So both designs can be taught during the same class. I just need to know what you would like to build as soon as you decide.

Fully Illustrated Class Manual
Class Manual
Each class includes a printed and bound 100+ page, fully illustrated manual, that documents the process for building your chair from beginning to end. It serves as a step-by-step reminder of the steps taught in class. Because the manual is so complete it minimizes or eliminates the need for you to take notes. This allows you to spend all your class time learning new techniques and working on your chair. The manual also has detailed drawings of every jig and form used in the chair. This will give you a huge head start when you begin to make that next chair in your own shop.
